Ashness Bridge is one of the most photographed subjects in the Lake District, and on this particular wet and windy day I was starting to wonder if the world really needed another picture of it. However, a short-lived change in the weather provided me with a brief opportunity to make a worthwhile image. Shooting on black-and-white film (the day had yielded little colour so far!), I filled the foreground with the boulders scattered along the path of Barrow Beck and made the arch of the little bridge the focus of the composition. An interesting combination of cloud types added some subtle texture to the sky, and the flat lighting allowed the film to capture a wide range of tones in the foreground rocks and stream.
