I set out early one December morning with the hope of capturing the fantastic Combestone Tor in early morning light. I arrived about half an hour before sunrise, and was surprised (as I always am!) by how much light there already was in the sky. I spent some time picking a viewpoint before choosing this spot overlooking a pile of granite slabs, with a weathered hawthorn tree and the Dart Valley in the background. I decided to take advantage of the pre-dawn light, and start shooting right away. I used exposures ranging from two minutes to thirty seconds as the scene gradually came to life before my eyes. The pink glow dominating this image was caused by the subtle dawn colour of the clouds reflecting off the foreground, before the rising sun bathed the scene in golden light, lending the scene an altogether different mood.
