Sandymouth is a stunning beach near Bude in Cornwall, and provides a wealth of interest for the photographer. The geology of the cliffs here is particularly interesting, and I love photographing the colourful patterns in the rock. This picture was taken just a few metres from the path leading down from the National Trust car park on an overcast day. Subjects like this are ideal for cloudy weather, when direct sunlight would spoil the image with excessive contrast. I moved in close to the cliff and chose a tight composition, emphasising the diagonal rock strata, and used these lines to lead the eye to the pile of pebbles in the corner.
